Which? urges consumers to check credit files
Consumers have been advised to check their credit files by Which? after a significant proportion were found to be erroneous.A survey by the consumer watchdog found that 16 per cent of its members who had checked their credit files found errors on them.
These mistakes included inaccuracies in their personal information and evidence that they were victims of identity fraud.
In addition, two-thirds of respondents had never checked their files and most of those who had had used just one agency.
Which? stressed the importance of keeping a healthy and accurate credit file, as they are used by lenders to decide whether to offer credit and what rate to impose.
It said that errors could be identified and corrected for just £6.
Consumers are also urged to use all three UK credit agencies - Experian, Callcredit and Equifax.
Which? has also called for expensive dialling codes to end after the Driving Standards Agency, BBC, British Gas and Manchester United all switched to cheaper numbers.
According to research by the organisation, only 24 per cent of members are aware that numbers with the 03 code cost the same as the 01 and 02 codes.
